Cushions are available at the San Rafael site. Chairs will be made available in San Francisco. We will sit in silent meditation for the last 10 minutes.

This will be a thematic approach with topics and agenda decided upon by the group members. The approach will be experiential (practice oriented) as distinct from a theoretical, philosophical, or academic rendering of the Yoga Sutras.

Schedule

NEXT MEETING: January 11, 2009 in San Rafael at 4:30 P.M. and will last for two hours (ending in a ten minute sitting meditation)

We will begin with Sutra IV.7   (See Kavalayam Pada).

IV Sutra 7 karma-asukla-akrsnam yoginas trividham itaresam

The actions (karma) [of a yogi who has thus rid himself from past residues by mastering meditation] are can not be measured, discerned, or grasped in ordinary relative terms as either white nor black, pure or impure, and so forth as the yogin's actions are no longer caused in turn by the winds of karma, while the actions of ordinary karmically driven beings are driven by cause and effect and can be understood and characterized thus in a three-fold (trividham) system.

IV Sutra 8 tatas tad-vipaka-anugunanam eva abhivyaktir vasananam

Thus they [non-yogis being propelled by the winds of karma] experience their habitual patterns (vasana) ripening (tad-vipaka) according to conditions which are conducive (anugunanam). Thus their negative impressions ripen, or they do not ripen, according to external circumstances which are non-conducive.
